## What is SubDex?

 

SubDex is a contact management app built specifically for General Contractors. It helps you organize, tag, rate, and quickly find the subcontractors you work with — all from your phone.

 

## Who is SubDex for?

 

SubDex is designed for General Contractors, construction managers, and anyone in the trades who works with subcontractors regularly. If you have a phone full of plumbers, electricians, and framers and need a better way to keep track of them, SubDex is for you.

 

## Is SubDex free?

 

SubDex is free to download and use.

 

## How do I add subcontractors?

 

There are two ways:

 

1. **Import from Contacts** — Tap the + button on the Contacts tab and select "Import from Contacts." SubDex will analyze your contacts and automatically detect likely subcontractors based on names and company info. You can review and adjust tags before importing.

 

2. **Add manually** — Tap the + button and select "New Contact." Fill in the name, company, phone, email, and any tags or notes.

 

## What are tags?

 

Tags let you categorize your subcontractors by trade (Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, etc.) and by details (Licensed, Insured, Residential, etc.). Each contact can have multiple tags. You can also create your own custom tags in Settings.

 

## How does the auto-detect feature work during import?

 

When you import contacts, SubDex scans contact names and company fields for common trade keywords. For example, a contact named "Frank - Plumber" or a company called "Expert Electric LLC" will automatically be tagged with the appropriate trade. You can adjust or remove any auto-detected tags before importing.

 

## Can I rate my subcontractors?

 

Yes. Each subcontractor profile has a 5-star rating system. Use it to track the quality of work so you remember who to call back and who to avoid.

 

## Can I add notes to a subcontractor?

 

Yes. Each subcontractor profile has a notes section where you can add timestamped notes. This is useful for recording job details, performance, pricing, or anything you want to remember.

 

## Is my data stored in the cloud?

 

No. All of your data is stored locally on your device. SubDex does not use cloud storage, external servers, or any online services. Your subcontractor list, tags, ratings, and notes never leave your phone.

 

## Does SubDex access my contacts?

 

Only if you give it permission. When you choose to import contacts, iOS will ask for your approval. SubDex reads contact names, phone numbers, and company info solely to help you import subcontractors. This data is never uploaded or shared anywhere.

 

## Can I customize tag icons?

 

Yes. Go to Settings > Tags, then tap the icon or pencil next to any tag to choose a different SF Symbol icon.

 

## Can I create my own tags?

 

Yes. In Settings > Tags, there is a "Create New Tag" section at the top where you can name a tag, choose whether it's a Trade or Detail tag, pick an icon, and add it.

 

## What happens if I delete the app?

 

All data stored in SubDex is deleted when you remove the app from your device. Since there is no cloud backup, this cannot be undone.
