What is SubDex?

SubDex is a contact management app built specifically for general contractors. It helps you organize, tag, rate, and quickly find the subcontractors you work with, all from your iPhone.

 

Who is SubDex for?

SubDex is designed for general contractors, construction managers, and other professionals in the trades who work with subcontractors on a regular basis. If your phone is full of electricians, plumbers, framers, roofers, and other trade contacts, SubDex gives you a better way to keep them organized.

How do I add subcontractors?

There are two ways to add subcontractors in SubDex.

You can import them from your Contacts by tapping the + button in the Contacts tab and choosing Import from Contacts. SubDex can analyze names and company information to identify likely subcontractors and suggest relevant tags before import.

You can also add a subcontractor manually by tapping the + button and choosing New Contact. From there, you can enter the name, company, phone number, email address, tags, and notes.

 

What are tags?

Tags help you organize subcontractors by trade and other important details. For example, you can use tags such as Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Licensed, Insured, Residential, or Commercial.

Each subcontractor can have multiple tags, and you can also create your own custom tags in Settings.

 

How does automatic tag detection work during import?

When you import contacts, SubDex looks at contact names and company fields for common trade-related keywords. For example, a contact named “Frank - Plumber” or a company called “Expert Electric LLC” may be automatically assigned the appropriate trade tag.

You can review, remove, or adjust any suggested tags before completing the import.

 

Can I rate my subcontractors?

Yes. Each subcontractor profile includes a 5-star rating system so you can keep track of work quality and quickly remember who you want to hire again.

 

Can I add notes to a subcontractor?

Yes. Each subcontractor profile includes a notes section where you can save timestamped notes. This can be useful for job details, pricing, communication history, performance, or anything else you want to remember.

 

Is my data stored in the cloud?

No. All SubDex data is stored locally on your device. SubDex does not use cloud storage, external servers, or online databases.

Your subcontractor list, tags, ratings, and notes stay on your device.

 

Does SubDex access my contacts?

Only with your permission. When you choose to import contacts, iOS will ask you to grant access.

SubDex reads contact names, phone numbers, and company information only to help you import and organize subcontractors. This data is never uploaded, transmitted, or shared.

 

Can I customize tag icons?

Yes. Go to Settings, then Tags, and tap the icon or pencil next to any tag to choose a different SF Symbol.

 

Can I create my own tags?

Yes. In Settings, under Tags, you can create a new tag by entering a name, selecting whether it is a Trade or Detail tag, choosing an icon, and saving it.

 

What happens if I delete the app?

If you delete SubDex from your device, all data stored in the app is removed as well. Because SubDex does not use cloud backup, deleted data cannot be recovered.
